London Lit Live Readings
Academy of Dreams, London
Sunday 22nd May 2011

Hosted by James Kleinmann, London Lit kicked off at The Academy of Dreams in Euston, London. The following writers read out extracts of novels and short stories.

Olympia Zographos studied English Lit at UCL and works as a free-lance web writer. She is writing a sci-fi novel with an apocalyptic theme. When not writing, she is to be found either in the park, at the cinema or hanging out with her two house-rabbits

Mark Kirkbride was born in Lancashire in 1968, grew up in Dorset, studied at Kingston and Oxford and currently checks DVD and cinema subtitles in London. He writes novels and poetry. And some of his poems have been published, including one in the anthology Emergency Verse that was then excerpted in The Big Issue.

Irenosen Okojie is a London based writer and the National Development Coordinator at Apples & Snakes. She is a Producer on the Underground Railroad Network, an online hub for artists of African and Caribbean descent. She has worked as a freelance writer, Press and Marketing Officer and was the Publicity Officer for The Caine Prize UK tour. She has been published by Flipped Eye, Pride magazine, Jungle Jim Magazine and BFM. Her writing has featured on Resonance FM. She’s performed at The Southbank Centre as part of International Pen’s Free the Word festival and at Spread the Word’s Our Words event. She is currently working on her first novel and a collection of short stories.

Aikaterini Hekate Papadaki always wanted to write. Unfortunately though, all the girls in her school wanted to study literature, and she didn’t want to be a cliché, so she studied science. After a brief period torturing lab animals, she gave it all up, became a vegetarian, moved to London and went back to writing. Hekate is dedicated to the refugee cause and the subject dictates both her occupation and her writing. She was shortlisted in the 2008 Kingston University Press life writing competition with extracts from her current novel, ‘The Missing W’ which she started writing a week prior to the competition deadline. In 2010, she was shortlisted for the Bridport short story competition.

Barra Bromley writes with tea and chocolate for company. Her writing influences are Victorian horror and contemporary literary comedy such as Kate Atkinson. When not writing, she can be found at the cinema, thanks to a Cineworld pass and the promise of more chocolate.

Duncan Abel has just completed a B.A. in English Literature at the University of Hertfordshire. Before that, he was working as a carer. Duncan has been writing for several years. He submitted his first full-length novel, The Way Home, to the Luke Bitmead Award last year, where it was awarded third prize. His short story 'Happy Meal' was recently shortlisted for an award, and will be published in the autumn by Spilling Ink. Duncan is currently working on a second novel, and is in the process of finishing a children's book.
